DENTAL SEALANT

SEALANT

Dental sealants have been used for many years now as a preventive measure to avoid cavities. They are made from tooth-colored acrylic and are applied on the occlusal grooves of molars and premolars. These grooves are where food residues and the microbes that feed on them accumulate because they are difficult to clean using toothbrushes. Sealants are simply applied on these grooves to add an extra layer of cover against microbe and food residue buildup. They also make them easier to clean, providing an excellent degree of protection from tooth decay.

Why Should You Choose Acrylic Sealants?

  • Sealants exhibit excellent durability.
  • They can be customized to mimic the aesthetics of the natural enamel, which keeps it indistinguishable from the tooth they are applied on.
  • They offer excellent sealing properties that keep the microbes from accumulating and causing decay.
  • They are long-lasting.
  • They are biocompatible and therefore will not cause any allergic or adverse reactions.

How are Sealants Applied?

When you arrive at our dental practice in San Jose, our team will screen your mouth to check for cavities and tartar accumulation. We will remove the decay and the microbial accumulation using ultrasonic scaling. The metal tip vibrating at ultrasonic frequencies will dislodge the tartar deposits, and a jet of water will wash away the removed debris. We will then prepare your teeth for the sealant. Then, we will prepare the sealant by matching its color with the color of the enamel to ensure that it will be indistinguishable from the tooth it will be applied on, looking like it is part of the tooth. It is then set aside.

We will then prepare the surface of the molars and premolars that contain the occlusal grooves for the sealant by roughening their surface using an etching liquid. This roughening will enable the sealant to bond better with the tooth. Once the tooth surface is roughened, we will meticulously apply the sealant on the teeth’s prepared surfaces. The grooves will be covered fully to ensure that the microbes and food residues do not accumulate in them. After they are trimmed as required, a bite test will be taken to ensure the sealants are not affecting your bite adversely.
